The will to win is overrated!

Over and over again I hear athletes talking about their will to win! however 3/4 of the athletes that I have encountered from different states, different level of school from High school to professional don't have what it takes to truthfully be a winner.  Their shallow description of a winner usually involves little preparation and sacrifice but a lot of fame and glory. I think people get caught up in this idea that winning will eventually happen for them if they stick around the game long enough, because they are the "CHOSEN ONE" is this right?

I love the sport of basketball it is the ultimate spectator sport. The gyms are structured like mini roman coliseums and the players are like gladiators! however this is far from the truth nowadays with the increase of media coverage and players personal notoriety tons of our brash and hard nose warriors are being converted to cry babies and pretty boys! does anyone see what I'm seeing?

I bring this up because "WINNING" is about preparation and sacrifice! like Lombardi said "the will to win is important but the will to prepare is vital". The shallow understanding of winning on so many teams is limited to the number of wins a team gets or championships! But I raise the question can a team win even if they lose the game? Can a season be successful even if the team doesn't win the championship?

I feel like every summer I see less and less kids outside in the field, and on the courts! I walk by certain courts in my old town and see hoops with cobwebs and courts that use to be fulled with kids and teenagers, now empty and meaningless! where are all the athletes that say they want to win? where are all the fathers bringing there sons to the courts to work hard for that scholarship? where are all the junior varsity athletes that want to be varsity starters? NOT where they need to be! and NOT doing what they need to do in order to DESERVE the title of being a "Winner". Too many athletes don't understand the work that is put into being a winner! but they are given a lot of excuses in their lives. These athletes feel like out of all the people in the world their entitled to be referred to as a "Winner".

  2. You are absolutely right... Too many athletes (and their parents at the high school and club levels)place responsibility for success squarely on the coach's shoulders. Athletes almost appear unwilling to work independently on their game outside of structured practice time. When they do "practice" a lot of it lacks effort. Too many times we'll pass by a soccer field and watch players lazily taking shots or doing things that require minimal effort. Today's successful coaches must be part magician, part genius, in order to bring out the best in their athletes.

Keep doing what you're doing Malik, you're posts are on point!

  3. Malik,

This blog is so true, I didn't get to play with you guys on that squad but i felt like I did as I lived on the block with so many of the guys who did. All of you inspired me in some way to better myself. Because you never gave up, and we would go to the courts for hours on end, (even when I would get frustrated and not want to because you guys were so much better). I have taken that never say die attitude into my adult life and it has served me well. I wish you nothing but the best and all the success i know you will stop at nothing to get.

  4. Hey Son

I am so proud of you son and know I am blessed to have you in my life. I will always be proud of you and always be there for you and I will always love you. You are a man, but you will always be my baby and my little boy with trusting brown eyes and bright shining face.

Life was not always so easy. You gave Mom and I some rough times but you always learned your lesson the first time. You never made the same mistake twice. You were always curious and would come out with the most amazing little known facts. Son, you could talk to anyone and everyone and make them hang onto your every word!
Malik you are strong, true, gentle, sensitive, brave, smart,
curious, sweet, courageous, rare and very special man. I must not forget your gift of gab and sense of humor.

    I LOVE YOU SON!! AAAAAA!!!!!!
